  • SECRET ORAL TEACHING IN TIBETAN BUDDHIST SECTS SECRET ORAL TEACHING IN TIBETAN BUDDHIST SECTS
    by Alexandra David-Neel

This is an account of the Madhyamika (Middle Way) school of Buddhism, a method of mediation and enlightenment that was developed by the great Indian teacher Nagarjuna. In a collaboration between the Frenchwoman Alexandra David-Neel and her friend, the Tibetan lama Aphur Yongden, these teaching are presented clearly and elegantly, intended for the layman who seeks a way to practice and experience the realization of oneness with all existence.

  • UNIQUE TENETS OF THE MIDDLE WAY CONSEQUENCE SCHOOL UNIQUE TENETS OF THE MIDDLE WAY CONSEQUENCE SCHOOL
    by Daniel Cozort

According to Tibetan traditions, the Indian Buddhist Prasangika-Madhyamika school is the onethat represents the final, literally true thought of the Buddha.
Unique Tenets of the Middle Way Consequence School presents and analyzes the issues that separate that school from the other principal schools of Buddhism - issues such as the existence (or non-existence) of an external world, the way in which karma and reincarnation operate, the nature of consciousness, the nature of time, and the status of Arhats (enlightened, but not omniscient , beings). Parts Two and Three of the book are annotated translations of Tibetan texts that are used as sourcebooks in monastic education.

  • Verses from the Center Verses from the Center
    by Stephen Batchelor

Verses from the Center is one of Buddhism's greatest reflections on the meaning of life, written by one of its most mysterious and legendary masters. Nagarjuna lived in India during the second century as a monk, meditator, and philosopher. Some believe he visited the mystical land of the Nagas to retrieve the Buddha's hidden wisdom teachings. Others believe he achieved immortality and reemerged as a tantric saint in eigth-century India.

  • BUDDHIST PHILOSOPHY: Losang Gonchok's Short Commentary to Jamyang Shayba's Root Text on Tenets BUDDHIST PHILOSOPHY: Losang Gonchok's Short Commentary to Jamyang Shayba's Root Text on Tenets
by Daniel Cozort and Craig Preston

What are the most important points of difference between the major schools of Buddhist philosophy? This rich, medium-length survey offers a lively answer. The introduction, aimed at those new to Buddhist thought, sets up a dialogue between the schools on the most controversial topics in Buddhist philosophy.

Jamyang Shayba was the greatest Tibetan writer on philosophical tenets. Losang Gonchok's Clear Crystal Mirror, a concise commentary on Jamyang Shayba's root text, represents a distillation of many centuries of Indian and Tibetan scholarship. Buddhist Philosophy skims the cream of Jamyang Shayba's intellect, providing a rare opportunity to sharpen our intellect and expand our view of Buddhist thought.

  • STUDY OF SVATANTRIKA STUDY OF SVATANTRIKA
    by Donald S. Lopez, Jr.

Madhyamika is considered to have had two subschools, Svatantrika and Prasangika. The Prasangika school of Candrakirti is better known than Svatantrika, in part because the major Svatantrika texts are preserved only in Tibetan translation. The Svatantrikas, however, made important contributions to Buddhist philosophy in their expositions of the nature of reality, the role of reasoning in the process of enlightenment, and in their delineations of the paths to nirvana. The synthesis of Yogacara and Madhyamika philosophy by the Svatantrika master Santaraksita represents the final development of Buddhist thought in India. In Tibet, Svatantrika was the first Indian Buddhist school to gain currency, prior to the translation of the works of Candrakirti into Tibetan.

  • THE CENTRAL PHILOSOPHY OF TIBET: A Study and Translation of Jey Tsong Khapa's Essence of Eloquence. THE CENTRAL PHILOSOPHY OF TIBET: A Study and Translation of Jey Tsong Khapa's Essence of Eloquence.
    by Robert A. F. Thurman

This is the first full study of Tsong Khapa's Essence of True Eloquence--a study of Vijnanavada and Prasangika Madhyamika. This translation and introduction show Buddhism as a contemplative and mystical religion and reveal Prasangika as a rigorous, critical philosophy relevant to our own time.
