JAMGON KONGTRUL'S RETREAT MANUAL JAMGON KONGTRUL'S RETREAT MANUAL
trans. & intro. by Ngawang Zangpo

This translation will allow the reader a unique and unlimited view inside the secluded walls of one of Tibet's most influential meditation training centers. The Kagyu and Nyingma tradition of Himalayan tantric Buddhism require a long period of intensive training in meditation--a three-year, three-month retreat--before a practitioner is considered to be a qualified teacher. Jamgon Kongtrul's Retreat Manual was written in the mid-nineteenth century for those who wish to embark on this rigorous training. It guides them in preparing for retreat, provides full details of the program of meditation and offers advice for their re-entry into the world.

  • CONCEALED ESSENCE OF THE HEVAJRA TANTRA CONCEALED ESSENCE OF THE HEVAJRA TANTRA
trans. by G.W. Farrow and I. Menon

The Hevajra Tantra is a non-dual, Yogini tantra introduced into Tibet during the 10th century. Also included is Yogaratnamala, a famous commentary by Mahasiddha Krishnacarya. This root tantra translation and commentary offers insight into the mantrayana yogic traditions and highlights the sophisticated and controversial Buddhist tantric methods. The method of the Hevajra Tantra was especially evolved from the views on the tantric Buddhist method found in the Guhya Samaja Tantra, the Manjusri Mulakalpa, the Tattva Samgraha and other Yoga tantra works.

  • SAT SAHASRIKA HEVAJRATIKA SAT SAHASRIKA HEVAJRATIKA
    by Malati J. Shendge

Satsahasrika-hevajra-tika, a commentary on te Hevajratantra, a Vajrayana or Esoteric Bddhist text, is published here for the first time. It is second such commentary to be available in print. A fragment of Sanskrit text only is available, the author being Dasabhumisvara Vajragarbha. Althoug the Tibetan translation of the commentary available in bsTan.hgyur comments on the whole of Hevajratantra, the editor has doubts about the authoriship of later chapters.

In the course of te commentary, the author throws light on the socio-religious ethos of his days and is hightly critical of many of the then current practices. Besides this, the commentary furnishes many technical details which are difficult to understand without a guru well-versed in the esoteric lore.

  • Creation of Mandalas: dKyil 'Khor Thig rTsa Creation of Mandalas: dKyil 'Khor Thig rTsa
    by Rong-tha

These three volume's set concerned with the lay out and execution of mandalas, mystical psychocosmograms of esoteric Buddhism. The author of all three texts which have been here reproduced and illustrated was the great 19th century Khampa master of Buddhist art and iconography, Rong-tha Blo-bzang-dam-chos-rgya-mtsho. This illustrious teacher's general work on the principles of shilpashastra has already been published in India under the title 'Thig gi lag len du ma gsal bar bshad pa bzo rig mdzes pa'i kha rgyan'.

To comprehend texts on the design of Buddhist icons, especially mandalas, however, is no easy matter: the vast technical vocabulary is inadequately known even to an educated Tibetan. It seemed, therefore, to be an act of merit to reproduced the text of Rong-tha's little treatises on three popular mandalas as follows:-

    1. Guhyasamaja Mandala
    2. Cakrasamvara Mandala
    3. Vajrabhairava Mandala
